Prayer Shawl and Blanket Ministries

Prayer shawls or blankets are given out to anyone that is in need of comfort, suffering from illness, surgery, or loss of a loved one. The college students have been receiving them also.

Quilters

Yes, we have a quilting group at Divine Shepherd Lutheran Church and we would invite everyone to join us on Wednesdays at 1 p.m.  We are an extension of the LWML (Lutheran Women's Mission League) at our church and our purpose is to make quilts for the Orphan Grain Train, which distributes these quilts overseas to be used as bed coverings, wall dividers, and even possibly floor coverings.  We use donated material and make the quilts nice but not beautiful, as the beautiful ones are confiscated and sold on the black market!

Our other purpose is to make a quilt top for each confirmand every year.  These are nicer quilts and incorporate Christian symbols, a Bible verse for the confirmand, and some personal information.  We display these quilts on confirmation day and for a few Sundays following and then they are put away until the confirmand graduates from high school.  At that time, we finish the quilt and present the quilt to the senior.  We hope that wherever they go after that, the student is covered with a quilt from Divine Shepherd Lutheran Church to remind him of God's love through the Christian symbols and his/her confirmation verse.

Mite Sunday!!!

MITE SUNDAY....What is it??

At Divine Shepherd Lutheran Church, the first Sunday of every month is designated as Mite Sunday at both services and a small “treasure” box is set at the back of the church for coins to be tossed into as you leave the church.

Why??

In the early 1800s, the Woman’s Mission to Woman urged members in its first circular letter in 1871 to use their new Mite Box to raise funds. The entire family was encouraged to contribute. Under the original 1928 Lutheran Women’s Missionary Endeavor organizational plan, every woman in every congregation would receive a Mite Box. Receipts in 1930 from the 92 Ladies Aid societies totaled $6651.31! At the 1953 convention, delegates reaffirmed the policy of raising funds and the Mite Boxes were soon referred to as “blessing boxes” or “mission boxes” or “thank-offering boxes”.

What happens to the money collected??

All the money we collect on Mite Sunday is sent to the SD District LWML, and they, in turn, send 25% of all monies collected to the National LWML. (75% of the coins are used here in SD. In 2012-14 AND 2015- 2017, our preschool received a total of $10,000 in grants from the SD District LWML!)

Today, the National LWML has set a 3-year goal to fund 22 missions to the total of $2,075,000...quite a change from the $6651.31 collected in 1930. And, that’s how our freely given coins collected on Mite Sundays are used...for the purpose of reaching out to others with the Good News of Jesus Christ.

If you would like a Mite Box for your home to collect coins from emptying pockets, found in the laundry, or to say “thank you” with an appropriate amount whenever a calamity or misfortune has been averted, please see Connie Rathert, LWML Treasurer!
